History of Gold Creations in the Charleston City Market

Gold Creations, created by Glenn and Vicki Wolfe, has been a staple of the Charleston City Market for over 42 years. This family owned and operated jewelry store is nestled in the heart of bustling downtown Charleston, South Carolina. You can find us inside the Market building at the corners of South Market and Church Streets.

The founders of our business are Vicki and Glenn Wolfe. The two met in high school where they fell in love! Their romance continued through graduation when the duo opted out of college and decided to travel west to see America. Looking for adventure, they drove all over the American Southwest in a VW Beetle. Glenn and Vicki experienced the trip of a lifetime in the early 1970s. They spent their time out west making connections and collecting Native American jewelry, pottery, and house ware from various Indian reservations. Bringing all these items back to Charleston proved to be a great decision and ultimately lead to the opening of the Wolfes' first store in the Market, Navajo Sunset.

Once the Wolfes had opened their first successful location in the City Market, business started booming! They sold through all their Native American collections and quickly outgrew the space that vending from tables allowed. The couple saw a great need for a permanent store to be located in the Market building and in the year 1974, Glenn and Vicki began to convert the only space they could find, which happend to be a storage closet in the market, into our family's 300 square feet jewelry store.

Many years of growth lead to popularity in the small family business and it was around this time Glenn came across a unique opportunity for expansion. The family was able to acquire the tools necessary to begin creating and casting their own jewelry. Glenn attended and completed Jewelers school in Florida and soon after began creating handmade pieces, many of which can still be purchased today. Most notibly, Glenn created several Charleston charms, like our sweetgrass basket, as well as a stunning monogram collection which are still extremely popular today.

As Gold Creations enters its 42nd year, the second generation of the Wolfe family manages the store and continues works daily with Vicki to curate a jewelry collection that expresses a rich blend of past and present. Glenn passed away in June 2010 and would be proud of the work his children are doing. For decades this family business has provided Charleston locals and visitors unique jewelry and the best customer service.

The little store is home to over 1,000 14K Gold and Sterling silver charms, featuring several hand made Charleston charms. Some of the most iconic collections are Charleston Rice Beads, Gates of Charleston, and Sweetgrass Baskets, which all have roots back to Charleston’s colonial days. Gold Creations also has many treasures featuring precious and semi-precious stones. The varying collections represent elements of the Lowcountry and make excellent reminders of a trip to Charleston.

Our store is a place where you can experience southern hospitality and fine customer service. The Wolfe family invites you to share in their story and become part of the next 40 years. Take home a piece of Charleston with you!
